GOWN CARE

STORING YOUR GOWN

In the lead up to your wedding day, we suggest storing your gown carefully and safely. Keep in mind your tailor will hold onto the gown until your final fitting. For heavy or beaded gowns we suggest laying these down in the garment bag on a spare bed or flat surface to ensure your straps don’t stretch after they have been altered.

If you are lying the gown flat please do not remove the gown from the garment bag.

For all other gowns, we recommend hanging them in their dress bag by the internal loops to ease the weight off the straps which may cause stretching of the straps and bodice once altered.

If you or anyone who is storing your gown own pets, please keep the bag away from them, as the bag is a dust bag and will not protect the gown from sharp claws poking through.

If you have purchased a Jane Hill veil or any other of our accessories to finish off your bridal look, we recommend keeping it wrapped in the tissue and box until the night before the wedding.

In the event you are travelling on a plane with your gown; we suggest calling the airline in advance to let them know you will have a wedding dress on board.

Do not fold and pack the gown into your luggage - take the dress with your carry-on items. Airlines will have space with the hostess’ to hang and hold your gown during the flight.

We do not recommend trying on your gown at home or without assistance before the wedding day, however if you do so, make sure you hold firmly at the waist and get someone else to zip you into your gown.

In the meantime, we suggest getting a “bridal kit” prepped for the wedding day, that includes bobby pins/crochet hook which will help your family and friends with your buttons on the day. We always suggest taking fragrance and chemical free baby wipes in the case of any marks on your gown. Needle and thread in case of emergency!

You will need a pair of scissors or snips on the day of the wedding to cut off your internal hanging loops, so always handy to have in your bridal kit, along with any spare buttons that came with your gown, in the case you need a replacement on the day.

THE NIGHT BEFORE

We suggest allocating some time to prepare your gown and accessories to save you time in the morning of the wedding, whether you set time aside at home or even preparing your gown and accessories at your venue.

The night before the wedding take your gown out of the garment bag and hang it up high enough for the train not to touch the floor. Window sills or tall doors are great for this! Whilst it’s hanging up high, this is a good time to steam any creasing and go over the bodice of your gown.

We recommend laying your veil or accessories on a flat surface once steamed so it’s also ready for the wedding day without causing crease lines from hanging on a hanger.

Your JH stylist will be able to help you with any questions you have about steaming the gown the night before the wedding if need be. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to them or to our general enquiries team at jane@janehill.com.au, alternatively you can message our Instagram where we can also help out.

On the night before the wedding, whilst the gown and veil are hanging up, they may need a gentle steam to get any of the fold lines and creases out - using a hand steamer gently steam the gown from a distance.

Please ensure the water in your steamer is clean - if you are unsure, make sure to empty and refill the steamer. You can test the steam on a cloth or white towel, alternatively if you’d like, test on the inside of your gown, and give the train a gentle steam.

For heavier gowns, in which are beaded and embellished they may not need a steam on the outside, it may just be the lining inside your gown. Any sequins or beading may melt if you hold the steamer too close to the gown.

THE WEDDING DAY

Just before stepping into your gown we suggest cutting off the internal hanging straps with fabric scissors. This will ensure you avoid seeing the straps through the gown.

On the back of your gown, you can see you have a zip and may have buttons also. At the top of your zip, you will find a small metal hook and fabric cotton eye, this needs to be done up before zipping.

Ensure you have someone with you to zip up your gown on the day, and make sure to hold firmly on the waist line whilst the gown is being zipped.

Once you are zipped up, take time to loop closed all the buttons with the stretch loops to ensure they sit flush. Some tips on doing up your buttons - you can use a ballet bobby pin, crochet hook, or simply finger nails if someone has smaller hands.

We suggest ensuring anyone touching your gown and zipping you up, has thoroughly washed their hands with soap and water so they don’t dirty the gown.

Jane Hill gowns are not designed to be worn with a bra, instead we recommend stick on cups if needed. These can be purchased at our boutique. If you’d like to make a purchase please reach out to your stylist. Alternatively we suggest wearing tape to hold yourself into your cup on the wedding day - this will ensure you don’t fall out or to the side of the bodice.

For the best fit on the day, we recommend underwear that are seamless and match your skin tone with a cut edge. This can be a seamless g-string, thong, or bikini brief cut on a raw edge with no hem or lace trim, please speak to your stylist about which option will work best for your specific gown.

Your hair stylist will fix your veil in place with a comb or bobby pins. We suggest your hairdresser creates an anchor point if your hair is down with a bit of hairspray so that your pins or comb will sit in your hair correctly and stay.

AFTERCARE

Your gown will most likely experience some wear and tear on the wedding day, which is a sign you had the best time! Do not stress as it can be cleaned.

We recommend taking your gown to Syndal’s Bridal Dry Cleaners after the wedding if you're in Australia. They will tidy the gown and preserve it in a box or a bag for long term storage or resale. Syndal’s also offer dry cleaning services for accessories such as veils and bridal shoes.
